Fire extinguishers are the first line of defense against small fires and must be fully charged or pressurized to be effective in an emergency. However, many builders responsible for fire extinguisher maintenance and code compliance and are unsure about when fire extinguisher recharge must be done or how to do it. Here we will clear everything about that.
Fire Extinguisher Recharge :
Don't take the plunge with a poorly charged fire extinguisher - the difference between a fully charged and a fully loaded fire extinguisher can be life and death! At Serviced Fire Equipment, they specialize in refueling fire extinguishers and can help keep your building's fire extinguisher under full pressure and protect you in the event of a fire.
How are fire extinguishers recharged?
- Dispose of fire extinguishers and pressurized chemicals in a dry chemical recovery system until the fire extinguisher is completely empty and has no pressure.
- Clean the fire extinguisher and make sure the label instructions are followed and legible. Check the cylinder for corrosion, dents, or damage when you weld.
- Check the inside of the fire extinguisher for damage. If damaged, replace spare parts as needed.
- Check the exhaust lever for dirt or corrosion. If the handle is damaged, replace it with an OEM approved part.
- Replace the fire extinguisher valve.
- Using a calibrated scale and a dry chemical recovery unit, fill the fire extinguisher with the appropriate extinguishing powder based on the weight indicated on the plate.
- Clean seat seals and threads. Seal with a sealing ring with grease, grease recommended by the manufacturer.
- Carefully center the cartridge and fire extinguisher head and insert the module into the fire extinguisher housing. Once positioned correctly, screw the head arm against the cylinder.
- Connect the fire extinguisher to the nitrogen pipe with a quick connector. Squeeze the handle of the fire extinguisher and press the fire extinguisher until the correct operating pressure is reached. Once the fire extinguisher has reached the correct pressure, remove the handle and switch off the nitrogen supply.
- Remove the quick coupling and place the correct hose / nozzle over the fire extinguisher.
The state of Florida requires that fire extinguishers used for commercial purposes be recharged by a company licensed to provide the service.
